FAMOUS SONGS
was the real author of the sad doggerel of our national anthem of which most people know at least one verse. The second verse is par-ticularly insular and British in confidence—that curious imperturbable belief in our own power t h a t h a s so often '* confounded" our enemies. F o r the benefit of the several who may not have seen the words in print before, I give the " poem" in its entirety as first written—the many other verses having been added from time to time.
" God save our Lord the king ! Long live our noble king !
God save the king ! Send him victorious, Happy and glorious, Long to reign over us,
God save the king!
" O Lord, our God, arise, Scatter his enemies,
And make them fall; Confound their politics, Frustrate their knavish tricks, On him our hearts we fix, God save us all!
" Thy choicest gifts in store, On him be pleased to pour,
Long may he reign ; May he defend our laws, And ever give us cause To sing with heart and voice, God save the king!" 207
